Incubation

Incubation, by Blue Byte Software, was sold as Incubation: Time is Running Out and Incubation: Battle Isle Phase Four.  About six months after the original was released, an expansion entitled Incubation: The Wilderness Missions was released.  The original enjoyed limited success, and while the expansion was favorably reviewed it didn't increase the game's popularity.

The game has three skill levels.  When played on the lowest or middle levels, it's a turn-based tactical combat game with some RPG elements -- you have a limited ability to determine how your soldiers evolve.  On the highest skill level, many of the levels adopt a "puzzle" feel, with little margin for error.

I have gathered some game statistics, and written a walkthrough for the campaigns.
