Date: Thu, 23 Jan 1997 00:45:38 GMT Organization: The Navas Group, Dublin, CA, USA Message-ID: <32e6af31.10142799@news.aimnet.com> X-Mailer: Forte Free Agent 1.1/32.230 Status: OR As a result of a lot of careful testing and evaluation, I now rate the JVC XR-W2010 CD-R recorder as NOT ACCEPTABLE for the following reasons: 1. If the drive was used for long periods of time, it would sometimes report a seek error shortly after starting a CD-R burn. The CD-R is trashed when the seek error occurs. Power cycling the drive corrects the error. (If you use the XR-W2010, I advise you to always power cycle the drive before attempting a CD-R burn.) 2. I reproduced a situation where the JVC XR-W2010 drive would rarely but consistently pass corrupted data (without an error indication) to the host when reading either a commercial CD or a CD-R copy (burned by the JVC drive), both of which read flawlessly in a Toshiba XM-3701 CD-ROM on the same SCSI bus. 3. JVC provides no support for its OEM drives that are resold by others, not even a driver to make it work as a CD reader. (It has not responded to my problem reports except to suggest that I buy a copy of JVC's own software.) Tests were performed on a 32 MB Pentium Pro 200 with bus mastering NCR/Symbios Logic SCSI and active termination. The JVC XR-W2010 was running the latest firmware version (1.51). A variety of software was used under Windows 95 Build 950a. My results support the negative assessment of Jeff Arnold (the author of the respected DAO) who writes: "I do not recommend using my software with any of the Pinnacle or JVC recorders due to the number of firmware bugs in these models" []. p.s. I've seen in OEM bundles an apparently newer JVC drive called the XR-W2012. While I did not test this drive, I suspect that it is similar, and urge prospective buyers to be very cautious. -- Best regards, John mailto:JNavas@NavasGrp.Dublin.CA.US http://www.aimnet.com/~jnavas/ From JNavas@NavasGrp.Dublin.CA.US Fri Mar 14 17:11:50 PST 1997 Article: 29971 of comp.publish.cdrom.hardware Path: ix.netcom.com!ix.netcom.com!www.nntp.primenet.com!nntp.primenet.com!cpk-news-hub1.bbnplanet.com!su-news-hub1.bbnplanet.com!news.bbnplanet.com!news.pbi.net!samba.rahul.net!rahul.net!a2i!news.walltech.com!nntp.mainstreet.net!news1.aplatform.com!newsfeed1.aimnet.com!news.aimnet.com!not-for-mail From: JNavas@NavasGrp.Dublin.CA.US (John Navas) Newsgroups: comp.publish.cdrom.hardware Subject: Re: JVC/HiVal - What's the problem ? Use Windows 95 Explorer to copy the Microsoft Office 95 Standard Edition Version 7.0B CD from the JVC (with a Type 4 driver, either Adaptec or JVC) to hard disk. Then use a good utility to compare the hard disk copy to the same CD in a CD-ROM drive. My usual result is 2-50 corrupted files. The same test does not fail on different CD-R or CD-ROM drives. 2. Use GEAR Replicator to duplicate the same CD on the JVC. My usual result is 2-500 verify errors. The CD-R tests good however on a CD-ROM drive, and compares perfectly to the original. Reproduced on two different JVC drives with both firmware 1.35 and 1.51 on two different systems with two different SCSI host adapters (Adaptec and NCR). Also reproduced by others. The bottom line is that the JVC XR-W2010 has read integrity problems. -- Best regards, John mailto:JNavas@NavasGrp.Dublin.CA.US http://www.aimnet.com/~jnavas/ From JNavas@NavasGrp.Dublin.CA.US Sat Mar 15 15:16:25 PST 1997 Article: 30493 of comp.publish.cdrom.hardware Path: ix.netcom.com!ix.netcom.com!howland.erols.net!newsxfer.itd.umich.edu!newsxfer3.itd.umich.edu!news1.best.com!newsfeed2.aimnet.com!news.aimnet.com!not-for-mail From: JNavas@NavasGrp.Dublin.CA.US (John Navas) Newsgroups: comp.publish.cdrom.hardware Subject: Re: JVC Read fail duplicated !! I decided to duplicate the tests myself.. I copied entire contents of a CD onto a HD, then ran a file by file binary comparison between the two sets of images ( using an MSDOS batch file to start with ). Guess what ? A verify error !?!!? Shock horror... So I did the test again..and again.. and put it on test for a few hours. Finally writing my own file comparison program ( in BC4.5) to do all the scans in one program. I'll put the program up on my web pages for others to use shortly. Results so far -------------- 1. Borland C++ 4.5 CD, reads fine, over 48 sets of tests with two different complete reads. 304 Meg, 5240 files. Left it running for like 6 hours. Zero errors. I can't get this disc to give errors. 2. Microsoft Office Pro. using disk 1, this errored 6 times out of like 12 tests. At a different file 5 out of the 6 times and most importantly AT NO TIME DID THE DRIVE REPORT A BAD READ !! The error was only picked up by the binary comparison. The last 3 times I ran this test if was perfect. 3. I've got a test going with the MS VC 4.0 disk , so far 3 reads no fails. For reference ------------- The files which reported an error were perfect, repeating the test on the errored files resulted in a perfect comparison. The test was performed with "Sync Data" on and off. System used is Zero Pantera Pentium 100, AMD PCscsi on-board controller, windows'95 4.00.1111. Conclusions ----------- So this error is fairly hard to re-produce, but it can be demonstrated. The MS Office CD seemed to be the best to report the error ( for some reason ). So the JVC Drive DOES pass bad data without the drive reporting a read failure ? This sucks, this makes the drive TOTALLY UNUSABLE in its current state and until JVC fixes the problem should be avoided !! This drive HAS a problem !! John Navas' test results are repeatable ! I stand corrected ;-) I would encourage others to try this test also. l8r James -------------------------------------------------------- Visit JROK's Web http://www.cyberpass.net/~jrok Home of the PacPc games, Video Game schematics and cats -------------------------------------------------------- From Usenet@NavasGrp.Dublin.CA.US Sun Sep 7 12:42:16 PDT 1997 Article: 44656 of comp.publish.cdrom.hardware Path: ix.netcom.com!news.webspan.net!feed1.news.erols.com!news-peer.sprintlink.net!news-sea-19.sprintlink.net!news-in-west.sprintlink.net!news.sprintlink.net!Sprint!207.20.0.14!vncnews!newsfeed2.vnc.net!newsfeed1.aimnet.com!news.aimnet.com!not-for-mail From: Usenet@NavasGrp.Dublin.CA.US (John Navas) Newsgroups: comp.publish.cdrom.hardware,comp.publish.cdrom.software Subject: INFO: JVC XR-W2010/12 problems Date: 1 Sep 1997 14:41:09 GMT Organization: The Navas Group, Dublin, CA, USA Lines: 70 Sender: Usenet@NavasGrp.Dublin.CA.US (John Navas) Message-ID: <5uek65$gc5$5@news.aimnet.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: dial-bp1-8.iway.aimnet.com Xref: ix.netcom.com comp.publish.cdrom.hardware:44656 comp.publish.cdrom.software:22262 * Be warned that JVC provides no support for its OEM drives that are resold by others, not even a driver to make it work as a CD reader. Support for drives sold under its own JVC brand isn't much better. (It took a fax to the president of JVC to get any response to my problem reports, and many months of serious hassling to get any real progress on the read corruption bug described below.) * If the drive is left on for long periods of time, it will sometimes report a seek error or track following error shortly after starting a CD-R burn. The CD-R is trashed when the error occurs. Power cycling the drive (turning it off for a few seconds and then back on) corrects the error. (If you use the XR-W2010, I advise you to ALWAYS power cycle the drive before starting a CD-R burn session.) * The drive will sometimes pass blocks of corrupted data to the host without an error indication when reading a commercial CD (e.g., Microsoft Office for Windows 95) or a CD-R copy (burned by the JVC drive) which read flawlessly in a standard CD-ROM. I reproduced and confirmed the read corruption problem, which is rare (and therefore hard to notice) but fairly consistent, on two different XR-W2010 drives on two completely different computers (Pentium Pro with NCR PCI SCSI and 486 with Adaptec EISA SCSI). I used a variety of software under Windows 95 Build 950a to conduct the tests. The problem has also been reproduced and confirmed by independent experts. Although the failure occurs with both versions 1.35 and 1.51 of the JVC firmware, it seems to occur less frequently with the 1.35 firmware; it also occurs with the unofficial 1.52i firmware that has appeared on the Internet. The good news is that JVC has now released firmware (version 2.05) that mostly (but not entirely) fixes the read corruption problem. In my tests: With the JVC driver (SCSIWCDR.VXD) I now got no errors when copying to either IDE or SCSI hard disk. With the Adaptec driver (CDR4VSD.VXD) I got no errors when copying to IDE hard disk, but I do still get a few errors when copying to SCSI hard disk (although much less than with earlier firmware). The new firmware (as well as earlier versions) is available for downloading at the FTP site ftp.jvcinfo.com in the directory /Pub/Firmware/XR-W2010 CAVEAT: I have now received one report that the 2.05 firmware did not completely fix the read corruption problem when copying to SCSI hard disk with the JVC driver (SCSIWCDR.VXD). A further caveat is that the JVC driver (SCSIWCDR.VXD) is only available bundled with JVC Personal Archiver software (which is not free). p.s. I've seen in some OEM bundles a JVC drive called the XR-W2012. While I did not test this particular drive, I understand that it is similar, and urge prospective buyers to be cautious. p.p.s. I found that Netscape Communicator 4.02 would not connect successfully to the JVC Info FTP site. If you have the same problem, use an FTP client, such as the free commandline applet that comes with Windows 95. To automate the process with the Win95 FTP applet, put the script file below in the current directory, and then type the command: ftp -s:get_205 script file GET_205 : ---cut-here---------------------------------------------------------- open ftp.jvcinfo.com anonymous jvcowner@anywhere.com binary cd /Pub/Firmware/XR-W2010 ls get 2010_205.zip quit ---cut-here----------------------------------------------------------
